What are cookies?

Cookies are files that may be downloaded to your device from the websites you visit. They are tools that play an essential role in providing numerous services of the information society. Among others, they allow a website to store and recover information on the browsing habits of users and their devices that, depending on the information gathered, can be used to recognize the user and improve the service offered.

Types of cookies

There are two types of cookies. The type depends on who the entity managing the domain sending the cookies is, and who is processing the data obtained:

  • Own cookies, are those that are sent to the user’s terminal from the terminal or domain managed by the editor of the same website providing the services requested by the user.
  • Third-party cookies are those sent to the to the user’s terminal from a terminal or domain that is not managed by the editor, but by another entity that processes the data obtained from the cookies.  Cookies installed from equipment or a domain managed by the website editor, if the information collected is managed by a third party, are not considered own cookies.

There is also a second category of cookies, that depends on the period of time the cookies are stored in the customer’s browser, these cookies can be:

  • Session cookies: designed to collect and store data during the user session on a web page. These are normally used to store information that is needed only once, to provide the service requested by the user  (e.g.: a list of products purchased).
  • Persistent cookies: the data remains stored on the terminal and can be accessed and processed during a period of time defined by the cookie processor, which may range from a few minutes to several years.

And finally, there is another classification with five types of cookies, depending on the purpose for processing the data obtained:

  • Technical cookies: technical cookies allow the user to browse a website, platform or application, and use the different options or services on these.  For example, they are used to monitor traffic and data communications, identify the session, allow access to restricted areas, remember an order list, place a purchase order, apply and sign up to participate in an event, use security elements during navigation, store video and audio content, and share content on social media.
  • Personalization cookies: allow users to access web services with certain predefined elements, established through a series of criteria on the user’s computer, such as the language, type of browser used to access services, the regional configuration from where the service is accessed, etc.
  • Analytics Cookies: allow website managers to monitor and analyze user behavior on the websites they are linked to. The information collected by this type of cookies is used to measure activity of the websites, application or platform and how users interact with them, and to build user navigation profiles and make improvements, based on data analysis of users’ interaction and use of the service.
  • Advertising cookies: allow the most efficient management possible of advertisements.
  • Behavioral advertising cookies: store information on user behavior obtained after continued observation of user navigation habits, to build a specific user profile and show the user targeted advertisements.
  • External social media cookies: used to enable visitors to interact with the content of different social media platforms (Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.). They are generated only for the users of those social media. The conditions for use of these cookies and of the information compiled are regulated by the privacy policy of the corresponding social media platform.
